An exit device or sometimes called a panic device or crash bar is a mechanical door hardware operated from the inside of an outswing exit door through the use of a crossbar or push rail and extends at least halfway across its width. Exit devices were designed to provide buildings with a safe, fast, and easy egress in high traffic and high use places which is why you'll find most of these installed in commercial facilities. Rim Exit Devices
Rim exit devices are a type of panic device that is used on out-swinging doors. This exit device hardware can have trim or levers on the other side of the door. They can be labeled as fire rated or just labeled as panic hardware. Rim exit devices can be used on single doors as well as double doors
Vertical Rod Exit Devices
Vertical Rod Exit exit devices can have latches at the top and bottom of the door or just one top latch. The bottom latch often isn't desirable because that latch might drag on the floor and cause damage. The top latch engages a strike on the soffit of the frame's head piece.
Surface Vertical Rod Exit Devices
The surface vertical rod exit device mounts to the surface of the door. A top and a bottom rod extend the full height of the door and are attached to latch-bolt assemblies. The top latch-bolt assembly engages a strike that can be either surface-applied or mortised into the soffit of the frame
